An initial assessment shows that Austria’s companies have so far held their own quite bravely in the corona crisis – not least thanks to the supportive measures taken by the federal and state governments. Nevertheless, the economic and social consequences of the pandemic are already being felt six months after the outbreak. Unemployment has not been as high as it is now since the 1950s. More than 420,000 people are currently looking for work, and around 450,000 are still on short-time working.
